DIY Harry Potter Monopoly Game with Printables & Instructions

DIY Harry Potter Monopoly Game with Printables & InstructionsDo you want to make your own DIY Harry Potter Monopoly Game?

I wanted to make one for myself and for a few of my friends as gifts. I searched the internet to see what other people had already made. While some people had some really great ideas, I didn’t see one that was exactly what I wanted.

So naturally, I created my own!

I don’t know how to use fancy computer programs like Photoshop, so I decided to create everything on Microsoft Publisher. I already had the program on my computer and knew how to use it. Honestly, it’s not a lot different from Microsoft Word just easier to use for pictures.

I am going to show you step by step how to create your own DIY Harry Potter Monopoly Game. Plus, I’m also offering you FREE downloads of the files I created!

All you have to do is print the items and put it together. It is actually super easy!

So, if you absolutely love Harry Potter like I do or know someone that does, this game makes a great gift!

DISCLAIMER: I do not own any of the images or fonts that are used to create this game. You may only use my templates for personal use. None of the items in the post or in the resource library can be sold or redistributed for money.

Step 1: Find a Monopoly game

used Monopoly game

If you are like me and want to spend as little money as possible, I highly recommend buying a used Monopoly game.

You can sometimes find them at thrift stores and garage sales for only a couple dollars.

The game doesn’t have to be complete, but you need to make sure it has the following items:

  • a box in decent shape (you can always tape it, but you don’t want it to be too rough)
  • a game board that is not really stained or beat up (look at the back, the game side doesn’t matter)
  • houses and hotels
  • 2 dice
  • a nice money tray (it’s not necessary, but it makes the game look nicer)

It is possible to buy a knock-off version of Monopoly, but make sure it has the houses and hotels. Many other brand Monopoly games don’t have them. You do NOT want a Monopoly Junior game because they aren’t the same.

Older versions are actually nicer because they come with a board the just folds in half instead of one that folds into a square.

Some Disney versions are also nice because they come with houses and hotels that look like huts and castles.

If you can’t find a Monopoly game used, you can always buy one new like this one from Amazon.

Or, you can find some on eBay for pretty cheap.

Some other options:

If you already have some pieces, you can buy other items that you need.

Step 2: Buy your supplies

The supplies for this game are pretty cheap, so it won’t cost you a lot of money to buy everything on this list.

Note: if you are having items printed elsewhere, you won’t have to buy the paper to print them on.

These are the items I purchased for this project:

  • Scotch Photo Mount: The adhesive spray is how you are going to attach the board and box cover to your Monopoly board and box. This is the spray I had, so I know it works well. There are probably other sprays that will work too, but I have not personally tried them.
  • Krylon Protective Spray: This is the spray that I used to protect the box and board from water damage. I tested this spray out by throwing water on my game board, and there was no damage! I highly recommend this spray if you want to protect your game!
  • Color Copy Paper: I was able to purchase my paper at the place I printed it, but you can also purchase it online if you are printing at home. I stuck with the colors of actual Monopoly money, but you can choose any colors you want.
  • Card Stock: you will need card stock for the deed cards and the Daily Prophet & Quibbler cards. I used white for the deed cards and 2 different colors for the other cards. Note: I used double-sided card stock for my Daily Prophet & Quibbler cards, but this is totally optional.
  • Game Pieces: you can purchase Harry Potter Nano Metalfigs on Amazon / (eBay) or use pieces from Harry Potter Scene It games.

If you are planning to buy several supplies on Amazon and you don’t already have Amazon Prime, you can get a 30-day FREE trial and receive free 2-day shipping on your order plus extras like access to Amazon movies and TV shows.

Step 3: Print Items

Downloading Instructions

To download our Harry Potter Monopoly printables, please follow the directions below.

Step 1: Visit the Resource Library

Visit the Resource Library located at the top of the page and choose Printable Games to access all of the printables for this game and other games we have created.

You can also click here to be redirected to that page.

Step 2: Download Your Printables

In the Resource Library, you can click the “Harry Potter Monopoly” button or scroll down until you find the different printables.

Click on the different printables you want to download, and It should open up the PDF in a new tab (at least it does for Google Chrome). We would suggest downloading them to your computer because they are easier to print from your computer instead of from the internet.

Printing Instructions

In order to transform your Monopoly game into a DIY Harry Potter Monopoly, you will need to print a lot of items.

Some of these items can easily be printed from your printer at home.

You may want to consider having some of the items printed for you elsewhere. If you are on a tight budget, you can print most items from home, but they will not look as nice.

I used to work in a workroom at my university where I could print stuff easily and cheaply. You might want to search your area to see who has the best prices for what you want to print.

It is really up to you and your budget. Many office stores have printing options available such as Office Max and Staples. You might also want to consider looking at your local print shops because they can sometimes be a lot more affordable.

If you’re looking for an online printing option, check out PosterBurner! They are a printing company that has affordable poster printing options.

These are the items you will need to print:

  • game board (about 19.5 x 19.5 inches)
  • box lid cover (depends on the size of your box)
  • instructions (11 x 17 inch plain white paper or 8.5 x 11 inch plain white paper depending on which option you choose)
  • deed cards (8.5 x 11 inch white card stock)
  • money (8.5 x 11 inch color copy paper)
  • Daily Prophet & Quibbler cards (8.5 x 11 inch colored card stock)

If you are using our downloadable files, instructions are included for each item 🙂

Each sheet of money has 10 bills on it. I printed between 4-6 sheets of each bill so that I had plenty of money.

You can choose from the regular game board or the Christmas edition.

money cards

Step 4: Cut out your items

After you print out your items, you will need to cut them out.

For the cards and money, I used a paper cutter to cut straight lines.

For the game board, box lid, and instructions, I used a rotary cutter with a ruler on a cutting mat.

The game board is 19 x 19 inches. Some newer games require a 19.5 x 19.5 inch board. If this is the case, you can just leave a white border around the board (it still looks nice!).

If you have one of the newer boards that folds into a square, you will need to cut your game board paper in half before attaching it.

Once I cut out the instructions, I just folded them in half and then folded them in half again.

If you don’t have any of these items, you can ask a friend! A lot of scrapbookers and quilters have these items.

Step 5: Attach your board and box lid

To attach your board, you could use a variety of adhesives, but I recommend Scotch Photo Mount.

If you use a different spray adhesive, make sure you follow the instructions on the can.

I laid out newspapers outside on my deck and sprayed the back of my game board.

If possible, you should try to do this in a well-ventilated area. You will want to make sure the surroundings are covered up so that the adhesive spray does not get on anything else.

spraying adhesive

Once you have sprayed the adhesive, you have to wait about 60 seconds before you can attach it to the board. You will want to carefully attach it and make sure it is on straight. It really helps if you have 2 people to do this.

Make sure you press the paper into the crease!

Once I laid it on the board, I used a brayer to roll out any bubbles and make sure it was completely attached.

You can get one pretty cheaply on Amazon, or you can see if you have any other tools around your house that might work.

attaching board brayer

The hardest part in making this game is attaching the box lid. It is SO hard to get the box lid on straight. If you’re a perfectionist like me, just know that it is not a big deal if it is not on perfectly straight!

You will want to cut the corners of your box lid before you attach it. It won’t fold as easily if you leave the corners on.

This works best if you have 2 people to help you.

As you can see in the picture, I cut out a rectangle in each corner. It is kind of hard to see, but I also made sure to cut a slit slightly past each rectangle.

Once you spray the box lid, you and another person will want to carefully place the paper on your box lid. Make sure it is lined up with the corners and has no bubbles in it.

Then you will want to fold under the long sides first and then the short sides.

spraying adhesive on box lid

Step 6: Protect your board and box

protective spray

This step is not mandatory, but it is a really good idea if you want to make sure that all your hard work is protected.

I used a protective spray to keep the outside of the box lid and the game board protected from water damage. This means that the ink on them will not run if it gets wet.

I used this Krylon spray, but I’m sure there are other alternatives. I just haven’t tried any others because this one worked great!

You will need to put down more newspaper or some other kind of protective material.

Follow the directions on the spray. I sprayed both the board and the box at the same time. The spray has a strong smell, so you will want to do this in a well-ventilated area. You will then need to let it dry for several hours.

Step 7: Paint the houses and hotels (Optional)

This step is completely optional.

If you don’t care if your houses and hotels are green and red, then you can skip this step.

One way you can get around this step is to create a Harry Potter Monopoly Christmas Edition. The green and red then make sense for the game.

For my own personal game, I used another brand Monopoly game. My game came with blue and gray houses and hotels, so I just left them that way.

For several of the games I made, I ended up using model paints to paint them different colors. You could also use spray paints if you would like. Just make sure that they are completely dry before you touch them.

Step 8: Put your DIY Harry Potter Monopoly game all together!

You have now created all of the items that you need for your Harry Potter Monopoly game!

If you are giving this game as a gift and want to make it look a little nicer, you can create paper bands to hold the cards together.

I just cut strips of paper and wrapped them around the cards and used a glue stick to adhere it.

I have made about 8 of these games as gifts or for myself. These are a couple that I have made, so you can see what the finished product looks like.

  1. hi, when i print the cards on the second side is some santimeters left or right and i dunno how to fix it . everything else is perfect

    1. Hmm, are you saying that they aren’t lining up quite right from one side to the next? Some printers aren’t great at printing exactly in the center of the paper. You might want to leave more of a border when cutting them out, and then it should be okay.

  2. Hi,

Still a work in progress, but already in love with this Monopoly game.
Made some adjustments with the money. Because I wanted Just a slight different version. 😁 thank you for the templates!!!

  6. Hi, Thank you for your job on tamplates. I subscribed for your mailing list and got the email to wait for the one with password to your library, but it didn’t come. It’s almost 24 hours so I want to ask you if you can check it for me, please. Thank you.

  7. I just wanted to tell you what an amazing job you did with this project! I am super impressed. I often get games from Goodwill and transform them into math games for my classroom. You really payed attention to such awesome details from the series, and I found those little figurines a few years ago and let kids choose their character to use for any game we played. I let my homeroom choose their game piece from my treasure chest full of little figure-toys and the classes who rotate through start with a generic (Sorry game piece) type of game piece for theirs until they earn an upgrade for their “AVATAR” in our hand-on games.

    1. Hi Ritchie,

Thank you so much for the kind words! That is such a fun way to use games in your classroom! I love the idea of upgrading to a special piece. Thanks for sharing!

  8. Jessia,
I want to customize the game board for my little nephew. What font did you use? I found a Harry Potter Font by wanted it to match your font on the board and cards.

    1. Hi,
So the font used for the Harry Potter logo is called “Harry P”
The font used on the game board spaces is called “Dumbledor 1” (this font is also used on parts of the deed cards & daily prophet and quibbler cards)
The deed cards also have part of the font called “Lumos”
The daily prophet & quibbler cards use the font “Aquiline” for the tops of the cards

Please let me know if you need additional help. I can always send you the links if you can’t find them 🙂

  9. Hi!

    1. Hi Jill,

I’m so happy that your kids are excited to play this game!

All you need to do is to sign up for our resource library. There are sign up and downloading instructions in step 3 of this post that can help you out. In our resource library, there is a version of the game board that is in pieces for easy printing at home.

Please let me know if you need additional help or have questions. I would be happy to help!

    1. Hi Mike,
I printed my game board on a poster printer. If you want to print it out as all one piece, I would suggest looking at different places in your town that offer poster printing. If you don’t want to pay to have it printed, you can also try to print it out at home. If you print it on a regular printer, you should be able to print it in sections and then piece them together. If you cannot get the file to print that way, I can email you one that I have made in sections.

          1. Hi Jessica,

I was wondering if I could also get that email to print them out in sections? At this moment, I cannot leave my house to print it out elsewhere.

          2. May I also get a copy of the file in sections? I truly appreciate these fabulous files.

            ~Pat

          3. Hi Jessica! Could you please send me the file to print in sections as well? Thank you for this great DIY!

          4. Hi Elizabeth,
Sorry for the delay. I just added it to the Resource Library, so you should be able to print it off in pieces from there.

          5. Hi Bonnie, you should receive an email from us shortly with the password and link to the resource library.
