One way to teach kids things they need to know is through books. Age-appropriate books can teach valuable life lessons to kids of all ages. In this post, I am going to share with you some of the best children’s books that taught my children important life lessons.

1. Berenstain Bears Series
The Berenstain Bears have their own cartoon show on TV. It is based off the many children’s books written by Stan and Jan Berenstain.
These books have many great life lessons for children. Each book usually has a problem for someone in the Bear’s family. A solution is offered at the end of each book.
Some of the topics are learning to share, dealing with a bully, having trouble with friends, visiting the dentist for the first time, polluting, too much teasing, and blaming others.
The books are thin and don’t take a lot of time to read. They are usually in paperback format and have lots of pictures.

2. Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle Series
These books are chapter books without a lot of pictures, but they are still great for parents to read to young kids.
Each chapter deals with a different problem. They are written by Betty MacDonald and are quite funny.
Some of the problems dealt with in this series are: tattling, selfishness, being a picky eater, not wanting to take a bath, not wanting to clean up toys, and fighting.
These are fun books to read to your child or for an older child to read himself.

3. Adam Raccoon Series
The Adam Raccoon series of books are written by Glen Keane and are written from a Christian perspective.
These books are about Christian values and what happens when characters in the books (which are animals) get into trouble.
Some of the topics are: following Jesus, witnessing, salvation, and love.
These are thin books with lots of colorful pictures. All the books I have seen are hardcovers.

4. Ladd Family Series
The Ladd Family series of Christian books are written by Lee Roddy. They are chapter books, so they would be for an older child or for you to read to your child.
I read these books a lot to my children before bed time. They are very exciting and each chapter usually ends in a cliff-hanger.
There are 15 books in the series. The first 12 take place in Hawaii, and the last three are set in Alaska. They are very descriptive.
Some of the issues dealt with in the books are: lying, disobedience, choice of friends, and quarreling.
Lee Roddy also has several other series that talk about values which I have only read some of these. These series are the D.J. Dillon series and the American Adventure series.

5. The Droodles Storybook of Proverbs
My mother used to read this book to my kids every time they went to her house. They always loved the stories in it.
This book, written by Ray and Sally Cioni, is an older book, but it is still completely relevant to today.
This book contains 11 short stories that are based on verses found in the book of Proverbs in the Bible.
Some of the topics covered are: showing off, being kind to the poor, trusting in God, and gossiping.

6. A Bargain for Frances
This book is written by Russell Hoban. I always enjoyed reading this book to my children. It is an “I Can Read” book, so young children can read it on their own.
A Bargain for Frances is the story of two friends. Frances is warned by her mother of how her friend isn’t always nice to her. Frances doesn’t listen and is cheated by her friend. She then tries to cheat her friend back. Then, they end up working things out and deciding not to treat each other so poorly. It is a good book about friendship and how to treat people.
